Philmont Scout Ranch

Northern Lights Council Crew 729’s Visit to Philmont

Take a hike in the mountains of New Mexico with an adventure that every youth has dreamed about. Backpacking, rock climbing, western lore, living history, and the views from peaks over 10,000 feet tall make memories that last a lifetime. Crew 729 from he Northern Lights Council made the Philmont trek in July of 2009 and made lifetime memories as shown in the above photos . . . an unbelieveable adventure! More tales and pictures from Crew 729’s Philmont trek will be posted at a later date.

Born in 1938 as Philturn Rockymountain Scoutcamp, today’s Philmont Scout Ranch is a bustling center for high adventure and training. Youth and adults take advantage of the ranch’s camping, training, and work programs. Most activity takes place during the summer, but Philmont also offers its Fall Adventure and Kanik winter program.

More than 860,000 Scouts, Venturers, and leaders have experienced the adventure of Philmont since the first camping season in 1939. Throughout its existence, conscientious attention to low-impact camping techniques have helped maintain the ranch’s wilderness flavor.

I wish I were that river, Lord, and that river were me.

(No, never been to Philmont, but I have friends who have.)

I went to Philmont in 1983 with troop 100 from Jamestown. We climbed Baldy and hiked to the Tooth of Time. It was a great experience that I’ll never forget.
